The Chief Digital Transformation Officer (CDTO) works to optimize business processes and develops new solutions using IT tools. In addition to modern technologies, the manager uses process, project, marketing and product approaches, team management practices and analytics to achieve the set goals. In some companies, this position may be called "Chief Development Officer" or "Head of Data Management".

What tasks does a digital transformation director perform?

Digital transformation for me is managing a pool of change projects aimed at implementing a strategy to improve business efficiency and competitiveness. To do this, it is necessary to decompose goals and constantly monitor their achievement. It is important to clearly understand why changes are needed and what results they should lead to.

For example, now you can apply online for a passport or remotely file a 3-NDFL declaration in your personal account without visiting the tax office. These are justified changes that have improved the lives of citizens of our country.

But there is also transformation for the sake of transformation, which only complicates people's work and increases resistance to digitalization. To avoid this, when planning technological changes, it is important to start from the needs of your external and internal customers, and only then will the changes be successful.

My path to the profession was unconventional: first, I received two higher educations in the technical and legal fields, and also completed postgraduate studies in systems analysis. Then I went through a series of interviews and competency assessments and was enrolled in the personnel reserve of highly qualified managers of the RANEPA Graduate School of Management . In the personnel reserve, I attended lectures and seminars given by professors of business practice and current managers of large corporations, for example, Kirill Menshov, First Vice President for Information Technology at Rostelecom. The speakers shared their experience and working cases, talked about how people react to changes and how best to support them, how to deal with team resistance and set up processes. All classes are free and are held remotely at the academy's site.

In my opinion, to become a digital transformation manager, you ideally need to get two higher educations: the first in IT, the second in the subject area in which you will be working. It would be strange if a finance specialist were to work on the transformation of medicine or vice versa. Then complete a CDTO course, which lasts about six months. Such programs can be found at the RANEPA Graduate School of Management and the Skolkovo Moscow School of Management.
